About Tom Test
For nearly 30 years, Tom Test has been a member of a weekly Men’s Group (yep, the kind where they beat drums together as a way of “being present in the moment”). “My authentic self being heard” is the most important experience there for Tom, and his genuine, emotionally connected reads reflect three decades of self-exploration.
Tom is an ex-corporate zombie with a Marketing BBA from the University of Michigan. He left that world in 1988 to pursue voiceover. Tom’s persistence eventually paid off, and after six and a half years of waiting tables at Chicago’s Houston’s Restaurant, he finally burned his waiter’s apron in 1994.
Tom had never acted, sung, or been a radio personality. He used to be painfully shy! But his training included performing improv on the main stage at Second City—and getting big laughs. Tom studied there with such luminaries in the improv world as Martin DeMaat, Norm Holly, and Don DePollo. He also took acting lessons at Act One and other schools. But what really turned Tom into a top-notch talent were the weekly practice groups he organized at local studios, where he’d invite ad agency creatives as guest directors. After nearly a decade of running these groups, Tom overcame the Catch-22 reality of “You can’t get work without experience and you can’t get experience without work.”
Tom has since voiced thousands of radio, TV, and digital spots, several of which have won Telly and other industry awards. He was the talent for a TV/radio/print campaign for the nation’s largest furniture store, Nebraska Furniture Mart, which won an award for “Watchability,” defined as “willingness to watch the entire spot rather than change the channel.” Nothing better demonstrates Tom’s ability to command attention. His whole career is all about “your authentic message being heard.”
